I am looking for a laptop for college. You must have a screen big enough for me to work. A large amount of memory would be a bonus to be able to transfer my music and pictures to him. Why do my old movies look grainy on an HDTV with an upconverting DVD player?

I have 2 400 disc DVD changers (SONY DVP-CX995V ) hooked up to my Samsung 26″ HDTV (TXP2670WH, I think) using HDMI (via an HDMI selector and connected from that to the TV via an HDMI to DVI connector. When viewing some older films (usually black and white), I notice the picture looks grainy on a lot of them and not very crisp. When I play them on my PS3 (using the same connection set up), they are MUCH better, which I attribute to blu-ray. Is it the HDMI cables? Do they “wear out”? I always thought Sony made high quality players, so I don’t think that’s it and the TV itself delivers a good HD picture. Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks TV guy, but I’m not being clear I guess. The DVD changers are the Sonys and they’re pretty state of the art with the HDMI. The TV is the older Samsung that does do 1080i, but using DVI. Does that help?

SD DVD are in 480p resolution. Your TV is 720p, so some scaling is involved. It looks like your PS3 has a better scaler than your old SONY. In addition, your old SONY outputs DVI which is digital RGB. Your TV is probably better callibrated for Digital YPbPr; this can make a HUGE Difference.
What to try: ditch the DVI cable on the SONY DVP and use component cables. You may see less noise.
Set the SONY DVP to output at 480i or 480p; that is, let the TV do ALL the scaling. It may have a better scaler and the quality may improve.

Need some noob help with Sony Vegas AMV making?

So I just downloaded Sony Vegas 8\.0 trial version and I was wondering if there was a convenient way of trimming and adding clips. Is it the same way as in WMM? Is there any way to split the clips up so it’s easier to view and easier to decide which parts you want to cut out and use?
The only way I’ve found out so far is just adding the whole episode to the timeline, then cutting it. But that’s not very convenient for one who has over 20 episodes to go through.
Basically, how do I split up all the episodes so it is easier for me to find the clips I need? I don’t mean splitting it on the timeline, I mean having all the clips split initially like in WMM.
