Sony’S Latest E-Reader: A First With Touch-Screen Navigation

Sony introduced the first e-reader – the short-lived PRS 500 – in 2006, before Amazon’s 2007 Kindle made its debut, but the Kindle quickly left the PRS 500 in its dust. In August 2009, after going back to the drawing board, Sony announced three new e-readers: the very basic Reader Pocket Edition, the more sophisticated Reader Touch Edition, and its most recent creation, the Reader Daily Edition, which was unveiled in December 2009.

The Daily Edition is Sony’s first wireless e-reader, connecting users via AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network to Sony’s ebookstore where they can readily access books, periodicals, and, so far, the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Post, Boston Globe, International Herald Tribune, and New York Times. Wireless service is provided with no direct charge to the customer. Sony used the launch event at the New York Public Library to highlight some notable new features of the new e-book platform.

Reviewers give the Daily Edition high marks because of its 7-inch screen that displays up to 35 lines of text in portrait mode, similar to a paperback book. The larger screen is possible because of the elimination of most physical controls, offering instead navigation with a touch screen, a first in the e-reader category. The user can make notes in the margins, turn pages, and highlight text using either his fingertips or the included stylus pen. The device offers an E Ink Vizplex electronic paper screen with 16 shades of gray.

Another new feature is Sony’s Library Finder application, enabling users to access their local library’s e-book collection simply by entering their ZIP code. They can “check out†e-books with their library card, download them to their PC, then transfer them to their Reader. When the borrowing period ends, the e-book expires. No late fees! According to the article “An Introduction to Popular E-book Readers“, usually in order to buy an e-book, you go to the online vendor of the e-book, pay and register your reader for Digital Rights Management protection, and download the e-book to the registered reader (Digital Book Readers). Since only the registered e-book reader can read this e-book, the author and the publisher are protected from piracy.

Another plus for the Daily Edition is expandable storage. Like the Kindle, the device comes with 2 GB, but it includes slots for two additional memory cards. The Daily Edition weighs just under 13 ounces and is about a half-inch thick. It retails for $399.

E-reader customers should have broad choices, said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. The devices will be available in about 8,000 retail stores, and connect to several e-book stores and libraries, he said. “It’s all about access to content … it’s about expression, holding, touching and using the Sony Reader,” Haber added. “We want it to be a ubiquitous experience, not locked in – open, open, open.”

According to Forrester Research, Sony will close 2009 with about a 35 percent share of the U.S. e-reader market vs. Amazon’s nearly 60 percent. Forrester expects U.S. sales of e-readers to be about 3 million in 2009 and continue to grow next year.

10) does it have internet access like the Kindle?
11) What is the warranty?
12) Does the touch screen have a lock so that you don’t accidentally change pages while you’re reading?

Some might find the R580’s attention-seeking looks a little too gaudy for their tastes, but there’s no doubt that it makes a great case for Intel’s new budget-focused processor. Battery life isn’t a strength – and it’s area where the Core i3-powered Sony(VGP-BPL4A battery) E-series fared even worse – but the R580 does just enough to earn a recommendation, providing good ergonomics, great performance and generous connectivity at a very sensible price.

The drawback, however, is that the buyers of the portable EliteBook 2540p must opt for the Core i7-640LM processor, which is slower and of lower voltage, and a 9-cell Lithium-Ion battery which is about $39 more expensive than the 6-cell battery, in order to achieve the promised runtime.

The 10-inch form factor of the iPad is too big to pocket. It could replace a Kindle, but it requires both a data plan (Kindle comes with lifetime data for free) and a secondary power source if it’s to last as long as a Kindle does. It has no phone features — and even if it had a camera, it is really too big to use as a camera. In short, I could imagine replacing my smartphone with the Dell(Inspiron 1300 battery) Mini 5, but I can’t yet figure out what I would replace with the iPad, and I already carry a smartphone, laptop and Kindle.

For once the hype is matched by reality because the keys feel great to the touch, have a wonderfully positive action and are very well spaced, making typing on the Edge a genuine joy. The i1564-6980CRD is a retail system and is not configurable at time of purchase. However, on Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery)’s Web site you can configure the Inspiron 15 with a faster Core i5 processor, more storage, software, and select from three other color options: black, blue, and pink. The Inspiron’s memory is expandable to 8GB and can be easily added via a removable panel on the bottom of the system.

The 3165dx has a solid assortment of ports and connections, but thanks to some sealed up ports on the sides, we can see it’s missing some options like a modem, TV tuner, and mini-FireWire port. The inclusion of an eSATA/USB combo port and an HDMI out port are welcome, especially the latter since the 3165dx has a Blu-ray combo drive. There’s also a proprietary HP expansion port (for connecting to an HP docking station). The laptop has integrated 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi; however, it lacks Bluetooth–about the only real let down with its connection options.

Still, our display looked good both when computing and playing back videos and games, although to its credit, the Asus(Eee PC 701 Battery) U50F, at only $649, looked equally good to our eyes. As always, Toshiba’s speakers are decidedly better than average. The stereo Harman Kardon speakers on the A505–6025 are louder than nearly any other laptop we’ve recently reviewed and have well-defined bass, a rarity. We won’t give this laptop a pass thanks to its speakers alone, but they help justify the relatively higher price.

Finally, for IT professionals, the new ProBooks come with Central Management for HP(HP NX6120 Battery) ProtectTools, which allows for remote functionality so IT folks can deploy and manage security policies across an entire business, with user and user type management, monitoring and auditing capability, and recover access.

Can I use non-apple iBooks on my ipad?

Just got a new iPad, and I’m keen to start loading up with books to read on holiday, but the Apple iBook store is a bit limited to say the least. Hopefully this will improve. In the meantime, can I use ePub books from other sources on my iPad? I copied some ePub books across from my wife’s Sony Reader and the fitted fine into iTunes and synced with my iPad, but when I tried to open them I got an incompatible format error. Any ideas?

The Amazon Kindle 2 and the Sony Reader PRS-700 are two of the hottest ebook readers to hit the market in the past 12 months, bringing reading pleasure to an entirely new level. For those who are new to ebook reading devices and are interested in getting one, here’s a comparison of the Amazon Kindle 2 vs. Sony Reader and how they match up against each other.

Price
The price of any gadget is a big factor for many individuals especially for first-time buyers. The Amazon Kindle 2 is currently priced at $359, while the Sony Reader is currently pegged at $399, making the Kindle 2 cheaper by $40.

Size and Weight
The size and weight of these gadgets don’t really give one distinct advantage over the other. The Sony Reader PRS-700 weighs around 10 oz., the Kindle 2 just slightly over that. The Sony Reader is a bit wider and thicker, while the Kindle is a couple inches longer. In any case, both are very convenient to carry around.

Display
The two reading devices both use e-ink technology which creates a display that is very similar to text on paper, eliminating eye strain, and providing an easy read with crisp, clear text and images. The Amazon Kindle 2009 however, is now enhanced with 16 shades of gray, while the Sony Reader has an 8-level gray scale.

Wireless Capabilities
Here is a category where the Sony Reader is clearly bested by the Kindle. The Amazon Kindle 2nd generation makes use of the Whispernet technology, providing free wireless coverage in the US via Sprint’s 3G high-speed network. Kindle users can gain access to over 240,000 book titles, magazines, newspapers, and even blogs. By just choosing the reading content of choice and paying for it, the book or magazine will be downloaded to the Kindle anytime, anywhere within minutes! The Sony Reader PRS-700 on the other hand, still lacks this wireless capability, and with only less than 100,000 books to choose from, it does not even come close to the breadth of content that the Kindle offers.

Formats Supported
Both electronic book readers support most commonly used formats such as TXT, MP3, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP, plus some formats unique to each device. The Sony Reader however, supports PDF while the Kindle 2 does not – not directly, anyway. PDFs still need to be emailed to Kindle’s support desk to be converted for viewing on the Kindle and Amazon has gives an advance notice that “some complex PDF files may not format correctly” on the Kindle.

Storage Capacity
In this feature, the Sony Reader gains the clear upper hand. True, the Amazon Kindle 2 has 2G of internal memory of which 1.4g is available for content and can hold up to 1,500 books, but it no longer supports external memory cards. While the Sony Reader’s 256mb internal memory may seem like peanuts compared to the Kindle, the main advantage actually lies in the Sony’s ability to support up to 16G of external memory. Now that’s a great benefit not only when it comes to holding thousands of content should one need it, but also for managing files into different memory cards.

Battery Life and Charge Time
The two ebook readers have the same capacity when it comes to battery life. On a fully charged Kindle 2 or Sony Reader, one can read straight for two weeks without needing a recharge. The only difference is that if the Kindle 2 is used with the wireless turned on, the battery capacity is reduced to just four days. Charging time for both readers is four hours via USB, or two hours using an AC wall charger.

Although it’s not a total knock out for the Kindle over the Sony Reader, it’s close! The Amazon Kindle 2 remains the better ebook reader hands-down. The price, breadth of content, wireless capabilities, and overall design improvements of the Amazon Kindle 2nd generation makes it a clear winner over the Sony Reader 700.
